Iran’s Foreign Minister Addresses Regional Tensions with Russian, Turkish Counterparts
(MENAFN) Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi met with his Russian and Turkish counterparts on Sunday to address escalating tensions in West Asia, amid rising concerns over regional conflict.
The high-stakes diplomatic exchanges took place on the sidelines of the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. According to a statement from the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Araghchi held separate meetings with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
During talks with Lavrov, Araghchi sharply criticized recent military actions by the U.S. and Israel targeting Iran. He reaffirmed Tehran’s resolve to uphold its sovereignty and pursue accountability for what he described as acts of aggression. He said the attacks represented a “lethal blow” to the United Nations Charter, international diplomacy, and the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Lavrov, in response, condemned the strikes, particularly those aimed at Iran’s civilian nuclear infrastructure. He underscored Russia’s commitment to regional stability and vowed continued support for Iran, including efforts within the UN Security Council.
In a separate conversation, Araghchi and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan focused on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The two officials urged swift international intervention and stressed the urgency of holding Israel responsible for what they termed as “genocide.”
The dialogue follows a dramatic escalation earlier in June. On June 13, Israel carried out a series of airstrikes across Iran, targeting both military and nuclear sites. The offensive resulted in the deaths of top commanders, nuclear scientists, and civilians. Iran retaliated with a coordinated missile and drone barrage aimed at Israel.
Tensions surged further on June 22, when U.S. forces launched attacks on Iran’s nuclear sites at Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan. In direct response, Iran struck the U.S. Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.
A fragile ceasefire between Iran and Israel came into effect on June 24, ending 12 days of intense military confrontation.
