MPs Call for Urgent Crackdown on High-Risk Cosmetic Procedures
The Women and Equalities Committee recommended that only qualified doctors should be permitted to perform these procedures, citing the significant dangers involved. The MPs noted that this would effectively act as a ban, as doctors would likely only carry out the treatments in essential cases.
Although the government has proposed similar measures, the timeline for implementing the restrictions remains unclear. Currently, there are no regulations governing non-surgical procedures.
The committee warned that this regulatory gap has created a “wild west” environment, with procedures such as liquid breast enlargements reportedly being carried out in Airbnbs, hotel rooms, garden sheds, and even public toilets. Women have reported serious complications, ongoing pain, and permanent scarring from treatments administered by unqualified operators.
In early 2024, Sasha Dean from Bedfordshire suffered life-threatening complications after receiving a liquid BBL, part of which was performed in a private home. She developed sepsis and was left in a coma.
"Very quickly it turned into a complete nightmare," Dean said.
"I had a heart attack, one of my lungs had collapsed, my kidneys were failing. My body was just completely shutting down."
After five days in an induced coma, Dean survived and has since recovered, though she continues to experience lasting physical effects from the procedure.
